The Theology & Religious Studies research Master's programme offers students the opportunity to conduct research in any specialization offered. Our dedicated faculty consists of leading scholars from within Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. They participate in national and international networks in their fields and provide state of the art expertise to make sure you are ready to meet the academic challenges ahead.

At Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam you can choose to specialize in one of the following disciplines: Biblical Studies, Church History, Dogmatics, Practical Theology, Philosophy of Religion, and Islamic Theology. Within the discipline of Biblical Studies, it is also possible to specialize in the field of Bible Translation. The specialization you choose will define the content of your personal programme.

The programme
The research masters is a two year programme (120 credits). The programme consists of in-depth training in specialized research and allows advanced studies in a wide range of theological topics and disciplines. The first year is designed to gain knowledge of the chosen specialization and to develop academic qualities; the second year focuses on the student’s own creativity in writing a thesis.

You can choose from the following specializations:

  • Exploring a Discipline
  • Leadership
  • Media
  • Building Interreligious Relations
  • Peace, Trauma and Religion

Year 1
In the first year several obligatory courses will equip the students with the skills needed to do advanced theological research and to develop an academic attitude. Students will also take two courses within their chosen specialization and do a research internship that provides insight to the chosen field of study. In addition, students will read two classical (theological) works together with students from other specializations.

Year 2
In year two, students will follow two courses in their chosen specialization and two courses of their own choice. Also, they will design  a proposal for a PhD dissertation. The second half of this year is reserved for writing an MA thesis (30 EC), which functions as the first chapter of a dissertation.
