North American Studies
The Master's in North American Studies at Leiden University focuses on key areas of North A merican history and literature. Explore in - depth major issues in the history, literature and culture of the U.S., including African - American history and literature, U.S. political history and foreign policy, immigrant and ethnic studies, and public memorialisation. An integrated approach is taken to all topics, with connections made between North American history, culture and literature, and contemporary developments.
An important aspect of the programme is learning how to conduct in dependent multidisciplinary research, comprehend and apply theoretical insights, and take a critical approach to all material. Opportunities are available for an internship or an exchange at a North American university. Learn alongside talented and highly - motivated students. Classes are kept deliberately small to allow for a high level of interaction with your lecturers, many of whom are leading researchers in the field of American Studies.
Curriculum and Overview
The Master's in North American Studies programme consists of one core course, three research seminars, and an MA thesis. Students can pursue a multidisciplinary approach, or can specialise in either American history or American literature. You also have the option of doing an internship at an organisation or spending a semester studying at a university in North America.
The core course 'Major Issues in American Studies' explores the major issues and scholarly and theoretical debates within the academic field of American history, politics and culture. Three research seminars provide an in - depth analysis of a particular subject covered by the core course. Students carry out research within these seminars using original source materials, published documents and/or critical and theoretical sources. Subjects include:
An MA thesis c oncludes the programme, which includes an oral defence. Individual tuition guides students through the process of writing their MA thesis.
