North American Studies

The Master's in North American Studies at Leiden University focuses on key areas of North A merican history and literature. Explore in - depth major issues in the history, literature and culture of the U.S., including African - American history and literature, U.S. political history and foreign policy, immigrant and ethnic studies, and public memorialisation. An integrated approach is taken to all topics, with connections made between North American history, culture and literature, and contemporary developments.

An important aspect of the programme is learning how to conduct in dependent multidisciplinary research, comprehend and apply theoretical insights, and take a critical approach to all material. Opportunities are available for an internship or an exchange at a North American university. Learn alongside talented and highly - motivated students. Classes are kept deliberately small to allow for a high level of interaction with your lecturers, many of whom are leading researchers in the field of American Studies.

Curriculum and Overview

The Master's in North American Studies programme consists of one core course, three research seminars, and an MA thesis. • Post - 9/11 literature, film and culture in the U.S.
  • Immigrant and minority literature,
  • Slavery and memory, and the American South.

An MA thesis c oncludes the programme, which includes an oral defence. Individual tuition guides students through the process of writing their MA thesis.
