Middle Eastern Studies

Middle Eastern Studies at Leiden University is a one - year master's p rogramme that is taught completely in English. It deals with a wealth of fascinating, inspirational and highly relevant topics.

From September 2019 you do not need to select a specialisation, but you apply directly to the MA Middle Eastern Studies.

The Middle Eastern Studies programme can help turn you into an authority on what has been for many years a region of constant poli tical, ethnic and religious upheaval. Learning from renowned, internationally respected academics, you will delve into a wide range of relevant and contemporary topics. These can include the history, cultures and languages of Turkey, Persia and Israel, about Islam and all things Arabic, as well as international relations and the political economy of the Middle East.

  • This is a highly flexible programme that allows you to focus on your own specific area of interest.

Curriculum and Overview

From 2019 - 2020 onwards you will take one or more courses on theories and methods related to doing academic work on the Middle East. Besides these courses you can choose from various elective courses.

These elective courses include courses in historic and contemporary manifestations of cultures, languages, literatures and religions, either directed at the Middle East in general, or at one of the regions of the Middle East in depth, namely the Arab world, the Otto man and Turkish world , the Persianate world, and Israeli society from the period of political Zionism to the present day. In line with one of these courses you will write a thesis of 20 EC.

  • Specialisation courses (30 EC)
  • Thesis Seminar and MA Thesis (20 EC)

Job and Career prospects

After successfully completing the Middle Eastern Studies programme you will have developed and honed a unique set of skills that will be highly relevant to a career requiring specialist language or cultural knowledge of the Middle East. Alumni careers typically include those in government, the travel industry, the diploma tic service, immigration and naturalisation and NGOs involved in development cooperation projects.

This degree will also serve as an outstanding foundation for furthering your academic education with a PhD programme.
