About International Relations

The MA programme offers a combination of fresh theoretical insi ghts and practical knowledge and experience, giving ideas and beliefs the place they deserve in European and global politics. You will be able to choose from five specialisations which each offer a challenging mix of theoretical knowledge and practical exp erience provided by specialist, academic researchers and experts with direct experience in policy - formulation and policy - making.

We are the only university in the Netherlands to offer this wealth of area specialists and the extensive range of contacts with national and international government and non - government institutions. Located close to The Hague, the legal capital of the world, we benefit from the proximity to the material and human resources concentrated there.

Upon graduation, you may have access to the prestigious MA in International Affairs at the School of Advanced International Studies of Johns Hopkins University, Bologna.


Why studying International Relations at Leiden University?

You will join the only master's programme in the Netherlands to offer five unique specialisations within the field of international relations. With a broad curriculum and flexible design, the master's degree in International Relations allows you to tailor your degree to suit your career goals. Five specialisations are available, each with their own thematic focus, and each with further scope for customi sation. You will be able to specialise in areas ranging from the European integration process to the global political economy.


Curriculum and Overview

The one - year International Relations MA specialisations offer an attractive mix of theoretical knowledge with practical experience.

All specialisations (except European Union Studies):

Semester 1 consists of:

  • a core course;
  • a preparatory course for your thesis;
  • the course Ideas in World Politics; 
  • and an elective.

Semester 2 comprises:

  • the course Regionalism in World Politics; 
  • a second elective; 
  • and a thesis.

You may choose electives (20 EC total) from a wide range of courses offered across the Faculty of Humanities. You will also have the possibility to exchange one elective for an internship, in or outside of the Netherlands.


European Union Studies:

During the first semester students take the fol lowing compulsory basic courses of 5 EC each:

  • History of European Integration
  • Institutions of the EU
  • EU Law
  • Economics of the EU
  • Regionalism in World Politics
  • Thesis Seminar and Methods in International Relations Research

In addition to these courses , you will attend a number of EU seminars. During the second semester, you may choose three electives from a wide range of courses (15 EC total) and you will write a thesis.

Job and Career prospects

As a graduate of one of our International Relations specialisations you will be prepared for a career in international organisations, government, non - government organisations, business, and academia amongst others. There is an increasing demand for well - trained, language skilled young professionals with a clear sensitivity towards the interdependence and the complexity of the world today.

Our graduates end up working in a diverse range of positions, examples include:

  • Policy advisor, at a ministry of foreign affairs
  • Communications manager and project assistant at an NGO promoting reconciliation and peace
  • Consular spokesperson at a ministry of foreign affairs
  • Consultant at an NGO
  • Project manager at a company specialising in geo - services, international development and project management
  • PhD candidate and research assistant
  • Communications officer at an international student federation
